Cast Fitting Size
Finding the correct size for the patient
As aforesaid, Magicast does not come in a roll, but in kits. Each kit is meant to serve one medical case, and it includes all the necessary materials for the application of the cast. Additional padding is not required.
Below is a table listing the different sizes available for the product. This information will clarify the table for you:
The kits come in several sizes.
The width of the sleeve is given in inches, and its length in centimeters.
Available lengths are 2”, 3”, 4”, and 5”.
Each width has 2-3 available length sizes ranging from 25 to 90 centimeters (see “product size” in the table below).
The desired width can be determined by measuring the circumference of the patient’s arm/leg in the widest spot the cast will cover. For example, a “boot” cast requires measuring the leg around the thickest part of the calf muscle, below the knee.
Having done that, you can see the minimum and maximum circumference for each width size of the cast.
For instance: a calf muscle circumference of 22 cm matches 2 Magicast sizes: the 2” and the 3”. In cases like this, always select the smallest size! We will therefore select the 2” size and determine the correct length for our patient by measuring the leg from foot to knee.
Magicast is not made of rubber and does not shrink of its own accord. It will always harden to match the circumference of the limb exactly. Therefore, a smaller size cannot apply pressure to the limb.
Once you try out the product on several patients, you will be able to select the correct size without taking any measurements at all.
Based on our experience, we can state that:
A half-arm cast for the average adult requires a 3” x 35 cm kit.
A half-leg, “boot” cast for the average adult requires a 3” x 55 cm kit.
