Swim Protection

PICC Cover

The DryPro PIC Line Vacuum Protector (Peripherally Inserted Central Line, usually used by patients who receive long term, intravenous medical treatments) covers the arm from the elbow to the armpit. Shaped like a long rubber sleeve (available in 5 different sizes), it covers the bandaged area of the arm completely and protects it from contact with water.

More info

The PIC line protector allows patients to shower with complete confidence, with no fear of getting the arm wet. Patients can even swim and dive in the pool or ocean, despite their medical condition. Of course, these activities must be approved the patient’s physician (some patients are prohibited from entering the swimming pool for reasons other than concern about getting their arm wet, such as the presence of bacteria or various chemicals in the water).

The PIC line protector is made of durable (latex free) rubber that can be stretched to up to 6 times its original size. Shaped like a sleeve, the protector’s openings are narrower than the arm it covers. This helps the protector to fit tightly onto the arm and seal it completely. The pump that comes with the protector sucks the air from inside the sleeve through a special valve, tightening the sleeve around the arm and creating a vacuum. The vacuum also makes it difficult for the patient to remove the sleeve while in the water, and makes any air that enters the sleeve very easy to spot. Checking the sleeve’s water-tightness is therefore very simple: no air means no water!

The wide range of available sizes means the sleeves can be used by both children and adults.

The protector can be used by patients of all ages. It is, however, necessary to measure the leg to find the correct size that would allow the patient to get in the water comfortably and with complete confidence!

Finding the right size

The PICC protector is available in 5 different sizes. It is suitable for patients with a PICC on their arm or patients that require part of their arm covered for any reason.

To find the correct size, measure the circumference of the arm just below the PICC and just above the PICC tube. Length measurements are unnecessary.

If your PIC line is very close to the elbow, measure the circumference 5-7 cm above and below the elbow.

Application and Usage

Base Guidelines :

  • The protector is made of rubber and can be stretched to up to 5 times its size.
  • Stretching is required in order to fit the protector onto the arm.
  • While using the protector, take care not to pull on the valve, pinch the rubber (similar to pinching an earlobe) or insert fingers and fingernails into the rubber. Keep away from heat sources and sharp objects.
  • After putting on the protector, make sure the ends are aligned on your arm.
  • The protector does not have to be fully extended on the arm.
  • Do not try to adjust the edges of the protector while in the water.
  • The vacuum pump is required for checking the integrity of the protector before entering the water and is an indicator of proper function underwater as well. It is not required for achieving a good seal, and is therefore optional.

Application :

  • Slide the protector onto your arm until it requires stretching.
  • Hold the protector with your thumb or insert 2-3 fingers underneath the protector to stretch (do not pinch or poke the rubber).
  • Stretch the protector by pulling at the edges around the arm, alternating between the upper and lower openings, until the protector is fitted properly and covers the PIC line completely.
  • Straighten the edges of the protector and smooth out any folds.
  • Connect the pump at an angle to the arm and pump the air out until the pump remains flat and the dressing is clearly visible through the protector.
  • Wait 5 minutes before entering the water, to check that the seal is maintained.
  • After bathing, dry the shoulder above the protector and the protector itself with a towel.
  • Insert a finger beneath the protector, allowing air to enter.
  • The protector will loosen and you may remove it easily. The protector can be removed in any way you choose, but we recommend turning the protector inside out (like a sock) and rolling it off your arm, starting from the end closer to the armpit.
  • Allow the protector to dry and store until the next use. Do not use heat sources to dry theprotector and do not leave it in the sun.
