Arm Cast Instructions
Instructions Arm
Each Magicast kit includes 2 sleeves: a white, moisture-wicking padding sleeve and a mesh sleeve saturated in polymer that comes sealed in a special vacuum pack.
Padding Sleeve :
- There is usually no need to adjust the length of the moisture-wicking padding sleeve, as it can be folded properly, even if it is a little too long.
- Measure to find the correct placement of the thumb hole. Be sure to:
1.Leave enough padding above the fingers to cover the hardening sleeve after applying it to the limb.
2.The hole needs to be as small as possible, so that at the end of the process, the padding is wider than the hardening sleeve and can be folded over it. It is best for the hole to be on the side opposite the stitch.
- Roll the sleeve into a narrow “doughnut” shape. While rolling, stretch the “doughnut” to widen the circle. Do this for the entire sleeve. We will refer to this step as “roll and stretch”.
- Gently slip the “doughnut” onto the arm, making sure to always leave a few extra inches on the side of the fingers (to cover the hardening sleeve at the end of the process). Using your fingers, slowly unroll the sleeve onto the arm, all the way to the armpit. Place the elbow on the table, to press on the sleeve and prevent it from rolling itself back.
- For your convenience, it is recommended for the patient to grasp the end of the sleeve between his or her fingers, to prevent it from being pulled back later.
- Check that the sleeve is stretched over the entire arm.
The Hardening Sleeve :
- Always wear rubber gloves for this step of the application process.
- Remove the sleeve from the vacuum pack. Measure and cut as required:
1.Measure the length of the sleeve and cut accordingly. The measurements (and application) are performed with the elbow bent at a 90 degree angle. The arm is measured through the elbow, using the longer route.
2.Make a triangular cut to create the thumb hole. Be sure to place the hole correctly.
- “Roll and stretch” the sleeve into the shape of a doughnut (as before). Start rolling from the side opposite the thumb hole. Be sure to stretch the doughnut to avoid causing pain and discomfort to the patient during the application.
- Immerse the doughnut in ordinary tap water for 3 seconds only. Squeeze lightly to remove excess water.
- Stretch the doughnut again and begin fitting it over the arm. With one finger, hold the thumb-hole over the thumb. Insert the patient’s thumb into the thumb hole and slowly unroll the sleeve onto the arm, all the way to the elbow, using your fingers.
- Because the elbow is bent at a 90 degree angle, it is best to try and avoid folds in the external sleeve (unlike other casting products, Magicast folds will hardly be felt by the patient. However, it is still best to avoid them). For this purpose, unroll the sleeve onto the elbow by holding the doughnut with both hands, fixing the inner side in place and stretching the outer side over the elbow. Then, continue unrolling the sleeve all the way to the armpit, as before
- Wet your hands and stroke the entire length of the cast in long motions, without pressing down on it. Arrange the edges of the armpit end of the sleeve and fold the padding sleeve over them to cover. Make sure not to fold the edges, but to spread them out neatly.
- Move on to the other end of the sleeve. Pull the edges of the padding sleeve out near the thumb. Avoid contact between the hardening sleeve and the patient’s skin and ensure sufficient padding for the thumb. Smooth out the cast using long motions once again.
- Arrange the edges of the hardening sleeve near the bases of the fingers and fold the padding sleeve over them.
- When you feel the “cast” starting to get warm, it is time for the molding step. Place the arm in the required position and hold for 1-2 minutes, until you feel the material harden.
- It is best to instruct the patient not to move for an additional 5 minutes before leaving.
Magicast Application – Arm + Thumb
Padding Sleeve :
- Roll the sleeve into a narrow “doughnut” shape. While rolling, stretch the “doughnut” to widen the circle. Do this for the entire sleeve. We will refer to this step as “roll and stretch”. This includes the rolling and stretching of the thumb cast.
- Gently slip the “doughnut” onto the arm, making sure to always leave a few extra inches on the side of the fingers (to cover the hardening sleeve at the end of the process). Using your fingers, slowly unroll the sleeve onto the arm, all the way to the elbow, and stretch it a little beyond the elbow. Lean the elbow on the table so that it presses on the end of the sleeve at the desired location, and prevents it from rolling back up.
- For your convenience, it is recommended for the patient to grasp the end of the sleeve between his or her fingers, to prevent it from being pulled back later.
- Check that the sleeve is stretched over the entire arm.
Hardening Sleeve :
- Always wear rubber gloves for this step of the application process.
- Remove the sleeve from the vacuum pack. Measure and cut as required :
1.Measure the length of the sleeve and cut accordingly.
2.Make a cubical cut to cover and set the thumb. 2 cm are usually enough.
- “Roll and stretch” the sleeve into the shape of a doughnut (as before). Start rolling from the side opposite the cubical cut.
With one finger, hold the cubical cut exactly over the thumb. Slowly unroll the sleeve onto the arm, all the way to the elbow, using your fingers.
- Wet your hands and stroke the entire length of the cast in long motions, without pressing down on it. Arrange the edges of the elbow end of the sleeve and fold the padding sleeve over them to cover. Make sure not to fold the edges, but to spread them out neatly.
- Move on to the other end of the sleeve. Cover the thumb with the edges of the “cube” and immediately fold the thumb padding sleeve over it. Smooth out the cast using long motions once again.
- Arrange the edges of the hardening sleeve near the bases of the fingers and fold the padding sleeve over them.
- When you feel the “cast” starting to get warm, it is time for the molding step. Arrange the arm in the required position and hold for 1-2 minutes, until you feel the material harden.
- It is best to instruct the patient not to move for an additional 5 minutes before leaving.
