Leg Cast Instructions
Instructions Leg
Each Magicast kit includes 2 sleeves: a white, moisture-wicking padding sleeve and a mesh sleeve saturated in polymer that comes sealed in a special, aluminum foil vacuum pack.
Padding Sleeve :
- There is usually no need to adjust the length of the moisture-wicking padding sleeve, as it can be folded properly, even if it is a little too long.
- Roll the sleeve into a narrow “doughnut” shape. While rolling, stretch the “doughnut” to widen the circle. Do this for the entire sleeve. We will refer to this step as “roll and stretch”.
- Gently slip the “doughnut” onto the leg, making sure to always leave 5 extra centimeters on the side of the toes (to cover the hardening sleeve at the end of the process). Using your fingers, slowly unroll the sleeve onto the leg, all the way to the knee.
- Check that the sleeve is stretched over the entire leg.
Hardening Sleeve :
- Always wear rubber gloves for this step of the application process.
- Remove the sleeve from the vacuum pack. Measure and cut as required. Of course, the measurements (and application) are performed with the ankle bent at a 90 degree angle, and the measurements are taken using the longer route, through the heel of the foot.
- “Roll and stretch” the sleeve into the shape of a doughnut (as before). Start rolling from the side of the stitch. Be sure to stretch the doughnut to avoid causing pain and discomfort to the patient during the application.
- Immerse the doughnut in ordinary tap water for 3 seconds only. Squeeze lightly to remove excess water.
- Stretch the doughnut again, fold the excess of the padding sleeve so that it is caught during the fitting of the hardening sleeve and begin fitting the hardening sleeve over the leg. Adjust the edge of the sleeve as desired in relation to the bases of the patient’s toes and continue unrolling the sleeve onto the foot, until just below the ankle.
- Because the ankle is bent at a 90 degree angle, it is best to try and avoid folds in the external sleeve (unlike other casting products, Magicast folds will hardly be felt by the patient. However, it is still best to avoid them). For this purpose, unroll the sleeve onto the ankle by holding the doughnut with both hands, fixing the inner side in place and stretching the outer side (the heel) over the ankle. Stretching the heel side creates a more widely spaced mesh than placing the same mesh over the ankle side. Then, continue unrolling the sleeve all the way to below the knee, as before.
- Wet your hands and stroke the entire length of the cast in long motions, without pressing down on it. Arrange the edges of the knee end of the sleeve and fold the padding sleeve over them to cover. Make sure not to fold the edges, but to spread them out neatly.
- Move on to the other end of the sleeve. Fold the excess padding sleeve over the hardening sleeve. Stretch and arrange the edges of the hardening sleeve as desired (another option is placing the edges of the hardening sleeve over the toes and trimming with scissors to expose the toes, thus leaving some support under the toes).
- When you feel the “cast” starting to get warm, it is time for the molding step. Place the leg in the required position and hold for 1-2 minutes, until you feel the material harden.
- It is best to instruct the patient not to move for an additional 5-10 minutes before leaving the treatment room.
- Instruct the patient in the usual way and as directed by the attending physician.
- Optimal hardening will be achieved within two hours, and the patient will be able to put weight on the leg (only with the physician’s approval!) after 24 hours. It is always recommended to use suitable footwear.
