Existing casting solutions are applied by enveloping the fracture in a roll of cotton or other synthetic material, which serves as padding. Once the padding is in place, the fracture is dressed in bandages soaked in plaster of Paris or a polymeric/synthetic solution with similar properties, which then hardens to form the cylindrical cast. These materials are, for the most part, impermeable. Brought together, these two layers usually irritate the skin and cause unpleasant odors brought on by sweating or contact with water.
This is where Magicast comes in. Shaped as a tube, not a cylinder, it comes in a kit that includes two woven sleeves. The first is made from synthetic thread woven into a net with excellent moisture wicking properties. The second sleeve, which acts as the hardening layer, is a loosely spaced mesh made of mixed threading. The combination of a moisture-wicking net and loosely spaced mesh creates a well-ventilated splint, thus preventing irritation and bad odors.
The materials and weaving technique used in Magicast allow the wearer to be immersed in water without worry. Magicast breathes and dries quickly, thus allowing the wearer to shower, swim in a pool or even the ocean with no limitations. Just swim, shower and get dry. How refreshing!
One of the components of the inner sleeve that comes in contact with the skin is olefin fibers. Used in diapers, these natural fibers are made from moisture-wicking materials that protect the skin from itching, redness, rashes and other discomforts.
They also contribute to the cast’s rapid-drying properties, further preventing skin sensitivity problems. As a result, patients who use Magicast do not suffer from the damage and discomfort caused by wetness, unlike those who use older generation casting products.
Magicast greatly reduces patient discomfort by being so much lighter than any other cast. It is so lightweight, that patients can easily move around and even swim with it, without being encumbered by the weight.
With Magicast, patients can be x-rayed without removing the “cast”, and the required radiation dose is lower than with any other product. Magicast’s x-ray permeability is so high, because it is made with unique, high-quality materials.
Traditional cast application requires highly skilled medical personnel. The main concern is to avoid over-tightening the dressings stretched over the fractured limb. An unskilled application can cause pressure sores and result in the need to remove the cast and repeat the application process – an unnecessary inconvenience on top of a needless trauma.
Being a net sleeve, rather than a roll, Magicast is much easier to apply. The process is foolproof and entails no danger of applying pressure to the fractured limb. The sleeve is simply “incapable” of pressing on the limb, and always remains wider than it. Most of the casting products on the market today are made of plaster/gypsum/fiberglass. The cutting of the cast during removal produces dust that damages the lungs if inhaled. In contrast, Magicast, when cut, produces no dust whatsoever. It keeps the environment clean, and can be easily disposed of, as it dissolves when burned, unlike the plastic cast in use today, which needs to be burned and buried in landfill.
